Monday, May 31, 2021SmartCase is LaunchedIntroducing the @smartcase.flute that I’ve been working on since 2017. In short, I wanted to eliminate some of the discomforts of the normal flute cases which first of all, were too long for most bags that I had to carry an extra flute bag (or a huge backpack to fit it in) when travelling, and of course also wanted to have something far more secure and lighter as well. (And later I also wanted get rid of velvets so there are less dusts as possible between keypads-> better sound😎!)
After hundreds and hundreds of changes and improvements, Elmar @kalb_manufaktur and I can now proudly say that this is finally the flute case that has every wish of ours fulfilled😁

Yes.For many of us musicians, this is not only just a difficult time but also a crucial time to think about what to put most values in life, and also sooner or later you will realize clearly how much music really means to you. Is music an absolute necessity for our lives? And why? Would you still want be a musician when there is no concert? My answer is always yes. Because I love it so much regardless of any outcome. We're not playing music to show how well we're able with the instrument or simply to make a living, but we play to share something very beautiful, intimate and touching. It's our vocation. And it's like dialogues between our souls- which only explains more strongly that we do need to play and share music more than ever before. So, keep playing and keep believing in music.

...Korean flutist Jasmine Choi began her training at the Curtis Institute at age 16 and completed a master's degree at the Juilliard School; The Telemann Files is her first Baroque album and her filth solo CD. Choi draws out the contrapuntal textures of the fantasias with a robust lower register. She has a broad color palette, which lends well to the development of individual characters. Her approach to the A-Major is spirited yet innocent. ... Choi's articulation is crisp and clean throughout, and her intonation is spotless. ... The best track on Choi's album is the Fantasia in D Major, ‘Alla francese," which she plays with welcome abandon. Choi is more generous with her vibrato in the upper register, and her tone in the lower register pedal points is explosive. The ornamental scales are played deliberately, with equal attention devoted to each note. The trills, likewise, are even, with the upper and lower note receiving the same duration and volume. Choi's performance of the largo preceding the final presto is exceptional. Overall, this is a CD that I highly recommend. ... This CD won't be collecting dust on my shelf any time soon.

Flutist Jasmine Choi is one of the most celebrated flutists of our time, known for her virtuosity and refined interpretation, as well as her adventurous projects. She has performed across the globe in a variety of genres from classical solo, chamber, and orchestral to experimental, jazz, and pop.

A former principal flute of the Vienna Symphony under Fabio Luisi and associate principal of the Cincinnati Symphony under Paavo Jarvi, Ms. Choi has performed as a soloist with the Vienna Symphony, Salzburg Mozarteum, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, St.Petersburg Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, Salzburg Mozart Players, Berlin Symphony, New York Classical Players, Seoul Philharmonic, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, as well as at recitals in Paris, Vienna, London, Munich, Geneve, New York, Tokyo, Seoul, and Hong Kong.

Her infinite curiosity has also led her to make her own arrangements of major works, including the Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky violin concertos, as well as performing new works by living composers. She has published numerous arrangements of hers through Theodore Presser Company, and has premiered more than 10 flute concertos written for her.

Ms. Choi served the Artist-In-Residence of the New York Classical Players for three consecutive seasons(2018-2021), and served the Artist-In-Residence at Sejong Arts Center in Seoul for its 40th anniversary season.

She has recorded several solo CDs under the Sony Classical label, including Mozart Flute Concertos, Fantasy (Virtuoso Flute Works), Claude Bolling Jazz Suite, Mozart Flute Quartets, Works of Brahms, Schumann, Reinecke. Other recordings include Telemann Fantasies, Love in Paris (from a live recital), Trio Joy (free improvisation), and three single albums including her arrangement of Paganini's Caprice No.24, Clarke's Great Train Race and Reichert's Encore Solo.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Choi has started sharing educational videos on YouTube for the advanced flutists, as well as collaborating with young pianists and introducing them in order to kickstart their careers, and interviewing leading classical musicians via live streamings and recorded videos.

In May 2021, Ms. Choi has launched the SmartCase, an innovative flute case that is light, durable, secure and fits to normal bags, making every flutist's wish come true. In August 2021, she has published the flute method books for beginners (Seoul Music Publishing) which made it to the bestseller chart in no time. She also writes articles for Flute Talk Magazine in the US and the Auditorium Magazine in Korea.

Between concerts, Ms. Choi enjoys teaching and guiding young students in master classes. She has previously taught master classes at Juilliard, the Curtis Institute of Music, Indiana University, Colburn School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Florida University, Harvard University, Universität für Musik in Vienna, among others. She has filmed Henle Verlag's Masterclasses series for flute in Germany and also serves the flute faculty of the Sarasota Music Festival in the US.

Growing up as a third generation of a classical music family in Korea, she started learning piano and violin from the very early age. A year after picking up the flute as a nine-year-old, she performed the Haydn Concerto in D Major with a local orchestra. She became the last pupil of the legendary Julius Baker when she was accepted at Curtis Institute of Music at sixteen years old. Ms. Choi continued her studies at Juilliard School with Jeffrey Khaner, and later had private studies with Thomas Robertello and Robert Stallman.

Ms. Choi’s performance was featured during the 2018 Winter Olympics’ celebrations in PyeongChang, Korea, and she is the Ambassador of Daejeon Culture and Arts Foundation in her hometown Daejeon, Korea.

Ms. Choi speaks English, German and Korean, and resides in Austria between concert tours. She has a strong presence on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, and enjoys communicating regularly with her fans.

최근 공연으로는 독일의 저명한 모차르트 페스티벌(Mozartfest)에 메인 솔리스트로 초청받아 모차르트 협주곡을 연주하며 독일 메인포스트 신문으로부터 “엄청난 플루티스트... 생동감 넘치는 색감과 확신에 찬 스타일의 모차르트”라는 호평을 받았고, 뉴욕 필하모닉의 주 공연홀인 링컨센터의 데이빗 게펜 홀에서 피아니스트 로만 라비노비치, 그리고 부다페스트의 역사깊은 두나팔로타 홀에서 피아니스트 교르고스 프라고스와 각각 성공적인 리사이틀을 마쳤으며, 전석 매진이 되었던 일본 도쿄의 닛케이 홀에서 있었던 리사이틀에서도 청중과 언론의 찬사를 받았다.

세종문화회관의 40주년을 기념하기 위한 상주 음악가로서 한 해동안 네번의 무대를 그녀가 직접 선택한 연주자들과 특별한 무대를 마련했으며, 3년에 걸쳐 2022년까지 뉴욕 클래시컬 플레이어즈의 상주음악가로서 매년 새로운 플루트 협주곡을 위촉하여 연주했다.

모차르트 협주곡집, 플루트 판타지, 클로드 볼링 재즈모음곡, 모차르트 콰르텟 전집, 텔레만 판타지 전집, 재즈 뮤지션들과의 즉흥연주집, 파리의 연인 라이브 리사이틀 실황, 브람스 슈만 라이네케 소나타 등 7장의 정규앨범이 발매되었고, 파가니니 카프리스를 비롯한 싱글앨범 3장 역시 호평을 받았다. 특히 크라우드 펀딩을 통해 이루어진 텔레만 판타지 전집 음반은 필라델피아의 클래식 라디오 채널 WRTI에서 이주의 음반으로 선정되어 라이브 인터뷰와 리사이틀에 초청받은 바 있다.

음악을 즐기고 전달하는 데에 국경과 장르의 벽은 없다고 생각하는 최나경은, 플루트라는 악기에 국한되어 있는 레퍼토리의 확장을 위해 바이올린 곡들을 플루트로 편곡하여 자주 연주한다. 그밖에 재즈와 팝, 즉흥연주 등으로 청중들에게 신선함을 주기도 한다. 현대음악에도 조예가 있어 패트릭 짐멀리, 이안 클라크, 캐셸 데이-루이스, 마크 레이콕, 데틀레프 글렌에르트, 클린트 니드함, 다니엘 도르프, 개리 쇼커, 알렉시 쇼어, 유리엘 밴체스타인, 김택수 등의 곡을 세계초연하였고, 오늘날까지 그녀를 위해 쓰여진 플루트 협주곡은 열다섯 곡이 넘는다. 그녀의 연주는 800만의 조회수에 달하는 유튜브 영상들로도 자주 접할 수 있다.

팬데믹이 시작된 이래 어린 플루티스트들을 돕고자 유튜브 채널 "Jasmine Choi 최나경"에 런칭한 “플루트 전공자들을 위한 영상” 시리즈는 큰 호응을 얻었고, 젊은 음악가들의 커리어를 돕기위한 콜라보레이션 프로젝트, 현재 활발히 활동하는 플루티스트들을 만나는 Meet the Flutist 시리즈, 그리고 월간객석과 함께한 Meet the Artist 시리즈 역시 그녀의 6만명 구독자들에게 큰 사랑을 받았다.

4년간의 연구와 실험 끝에 출시된 <스마트케이스> 는 그녀가 기존에 있던 플루트 케이스의 단점들을 모두 보완하여 개발되고 디자인함에 따라, 수많은 플루티스트들의 고민을 해결해 주는 데 큰 역할을 하였다. 뿐만 아니라 플루트 입문자들을 위한 교본 <최나경의 플루트 교실 1, 2권>은 2021년 출판되자마자 베스트셀러 리스트에 올랐고, 교본의 설명과 연주를 직접 영상으로도 담아 입문자들이 더욱 쉽게 악기를 배울 수 있게 도와주었다. 2023년에는 그녀가 직접 편곡한 여러 장르의 명곡들을 모아 <플루트 연주곡집 1, 2, 3, 4권>을 출판하여 많은 사람들이 플루트에 좀더 쉽게 다가갈 수 있게 되었다.

최나경은 대전 성모초등학교, 예원학교를 거쳐 서울예고 재학 중, 플루트의 거장 줄리어스 베이커로부터 “커다란 센세이션”이라는 극찬을 받으며 만 16세에 미국 커티스 음대에 전액 장학생으로 입학했고, 이후 그가 세상을 떠나기 전까지 4년을 공부하며 거장의 마지막 제자가 되었다. 졸업후 줄리어드 음대에서 제프리 케이너를 사사했고 이후 커티스 음대, 줄리어드 음대를 비롯해 콜번 스쿨, 맨하탄 음대, 인디애나 주립대, 플로리다 대학, 비엔나 음대, 뮌헨 음대 등에서 초청 마스터클래스를 가진 바 있으며, 독일의 역사깊은 출판사인 헨레에서 진행하는 플루트 클래스 교수진, 미국의 저명한 사라소타 페스티벌의 교수진을 비롯, 카네기홀에서 주최하는 미국 유스오케스트라의 플루트 교수진으로 활동하는 등 후학 양성에도 열정을 쏟고 있다.

Die Flötistin Jasmine Choi ist eine der am meisten gefeierten Flötistinnen unserer Zeit. Sie ist bekannt für ihre Virtuosität und ihre raffinierte Musikalität, ebenso wie ihre abenteuerlichen Projekte. Sie ist in einer Vielzahl von Genres weltweit aufgetreten, von klassischen Solo-, Kammermusik- und Orchesterkonzerten bis hin zu Experimentalmusik, Jazz und Pop.

Als ehemalige Soloflötistin der Wiener Symphonikern unter Fabio Luisi und stellvertretende Soloflötistin des Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra unter Paavo Jarvi konzertierte Frau Choi als Solistin mit den Wiener Symphonikern, dem Mozarteum Salzburg, dem Philadelphia Orchestra, dem Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, der St. Petersburger Philharmonie, der Tschechischen Philharmonie, den Salzburg Mozart Players, den Berliner Symphonikern, den New York Classical Players, dem Seoul Philharmonic, dem Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa sowie bei Konzerten in Paris, Wien, London, München, Genf, New York, Tokio, Seoul und Hongkong.

Ihre unendliche Neugier hat sie außerdem dazu gebracht, eigene Arrangements großer Werke, darunter die Violinkonzerte von Mendelssohn und Tschaikowsky, anzufertigen und neue Werke von lebenden Komponisten aufzuführen. Sie hat zahlreiche Arrangements bei der Theodore Presser Company veröffentlicht und mehr als zehn für sie geschriebene Flötenkonzerte uraufgeführt.

Frau Choi war in drei aufeinanderfolgenden Jahren (2018-2021) Artist-in-Residence der New York Classical Players und diente als Artist-in-Residence im Sejong Arts Center in Seoul für das Jahr dessen 40-jährigen Jubiläums.

Seit dem Ausbruch der COVID-19-Pandemie hat Frau Choi begonnen, Lehrvideos für fortgeschrittene Flötisten auf YouTube zu veröffentlichen, mit jungen Pianisten zusammenzuarbeiten und sie vorzustellen, um ihre Karriere anzukurbeln, und führende klassische Musiker über Livestreams und aufgezeichnete Videos zu interviewen. 

Im Mai 2021 hat Frau Choi den SmartCase auf den Markt gebracht, einen innovativen Flötenkoffer, der leicht, haltbar und sicher ist und in normale Taschen passt, womit der Wunsch eines jeden Flötisten in Erfüllung ging. Im August 2021 veröffentlichte sie die Flöten-Methodenbücher für Anfänger (Seoul Music Publishing), die es in kürzester Zeit auf die Bestsellerliste schafften. Sie schreibt auch Artikel für das Flute Talk Magazine in den USA und das Auditorium Magazine in Korea.

Zwischen den Konzerten unterrichtet Frau Choi gerne und leitet junge Schüler in Meisterkursen an. Sie hat bereits Meisterkurse an der Juilliard School, dem Curtis Institute of Music, der Indiana University, der Colburn School of Music, der Manhattan School of Music, der Florida University, der Harvard University, der Universität für Musik in Wien und anderen unterrichtet.

Sie wuchs in der dritten Generation einer Familie von klassischen Musikern in Korea auf und lernte von klein auf Klavier und Geige. Jasmine Choi est l'une des flûtistes les plus célèbres de notre époque, connue pour sa virtuosité et sa musicalité raffinée, ainsi que pour ses projets aventureux. Elle a joué à travers le monde dans une variété de genres allant du classique solo, de la musique de chambre et de l'orchestre à l'expérimental, au jazz et à la pop.

Sa curiosité insatiable l'a également amenée à composer ses propres arrangements d'œuvres majeures, dont les concertos pour violon de Mendelssohn et de Tchaïkovski, ainsi qu'à interpréter de nouvelles œuvres de compositeurs vivants. Elle a publié de nombreux arrangements grâce à la Theodore Presser Company et a présenter en première plus de 10 concertos pour flûte écrits pour elle.

Mme Choi a été l'artiste en résidence des New York Classical Players pour trois saisons consécutives (2018-2021), et a été l'artiste en résidence au Sejong Arts Center à Séoul pour sa saison du 40e anniversaire.

Elle a enregistré plusieurs CD solo avec le label Sony Classical, dont les Concertos pour flûte de Mozart, Fantasy (Virtuoso Flute Works), Claude Bolling Jazz Suite, les Quatuors pour flûte de Mozart, les œuvres de Brahms, Schumann, Reinecke.
